Gaydar
I'm David Clements. This is Be Connected. Until recently, Gaydar was considered no more than human intuition that some people had and some people didn't. Well, now, that's all changed. Michael Borer, of Borer's Nest, is marketing a device similar to a pager that can alert the wearer if other people of the same persuasion happen to be within 50 ft.

Electronic Gaydar as it's called, has different settings that pertain to different interests and personality types. You can search only for an ideal match or see if opposites attract. Michael Borer got the idea from some of his friends and relatives who've been frustrated trying to meet the right person in a culture that isn't very supportive.

"If you've ever talked to a straight single person that's 30 something and asked them how they feel about bars, they'll probably tell you they are just tired of it. Basically a gay person can only meet other gay people in gay areas and that would be a coffee shop or bar. They're extremely sick and tired of the bar scene. At least, the older people are."

Some critics have charged that this high tech approach will take the fun and spontaneity out of dating, but Michael feels differently.

"It's more spontaneous. Even though it sounds like it's something that would hinder spontaneity, it's actually more spontaneous then you would have in a normal situation. You could be walking down the street and suddenly your life changes."

Electronic Gaydar is slated to be available soon in highly populated gay areas and on the website, www.gayradar.com. There is also a version of the product for straight people called the Love Getty or the Electronic Cupid.

"It's kind of a stupid thought. Who would have thought that this technology could have been brought to that kind of use? It is funny, but it is useful."

In case you were wondering, Michael Borer and his wife recently celebrated the birth of their 1st baby girl. You can find out more about this story or any other on our website, www.beconnected.org.
