For
many years now the medical community has been performing surgery
to repair joints and replace damaged tissue.
When
a hip operation is performed, for example, a titanium joint
is usually created and integrated with the bone. In other
areas of the body, sometimes tissue can be grafted. Sometimes,
even cadaver material is used. Scientists at the University
of Michigan and elsewhere are studying new approaches that
will likely change the ways in which we approach treating
these kinds of injuries. Tissue replacement operations could
soon become more of a science and less of an art. David Clements,
producer of the “Be Connected” Series on Technology, has more.
